这部带有惊悚色彩的影片是一部从心里分析入手的公安题材侦破片。影片通过着力塑造的锦州市公安局刑警队长陈哲及心理咨询师楚河在侦破该市多年发生的系列绑架妇女杀人案的理性分析、缜密调查和果断行动，揭示了某些当代刑事案件的心理学规律及其社会原因。对社会及其家庭教育有一定的警示性意义，影片侦破案最后瞬间一幕，陈哲扑向引爆炸药的罪犯，已与罪犯同归于尽的壮举换取其他人的安全，给人民警察的形象涂上重彩的一笔。影片热情歌颂了公安干警执政为民，还社会一片安宁的感人故事。故事较为曲折，人物性格较为鲜明。
